Cool Money

As a prank, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak sometimes buys uncut sheets of $2 bills from the U.S. Treasury and has them bound into booklets. Then, when buying small items, he'll pull out a booklet and cut off a few bills with scissors.
This is perfectly legal, but it's caused at least one alarmed inquiry by the Secret Service.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Despite calamities from economic recessions, wars and famine to a flu epidemic afflicting the Earth, a new study from the University of Kansas and Gallup indicates that humans are by nature optimistic.
The study, to be presented Sunday, May 24, 2009, at the annual meeting of the Association for Psychological Science in San Francisco, found optimism to be universal and borderless.
Data from the Gallup World Poll drove the findings, with adults in more than 140 countries providing a representative sample of 95 percent of the world's population. The sample included more than 150,000 adults.
Eighty-nine percent of individuals worldwide expect the next five years to be as good or better than their current life, and 95 percent of individuals expected their life in five years to be as good or better than their life was five years ago.
"These results provide compelling evidence that optimism is a universal phenomenon," said Matthew Gallagher, a psychology doctoral candidate at the University of Kansas and lead researcher of the study.
At the country level, optimism is highest in Ireland, Brazil, Denmark, and New Zealand and lowest in Zimbabwe, Egypt, Haiti and Bulgaria. The United States ranks number 10 on the list of optimistic countries.
Demographic factors (age and household income) appear to have only modest effects on individual levels of optimism.

Animal Hybrid-Lemurat

With the growing wealth of China, many rich Chinese women are seeking alternative and exotic pets to show off their money. This has lead to a number of Chinese medical and scientific research companies to compete for this new income source by producing cross breed animals. The most successful (financially) so far has been the Lemur Cat. It is (as the name suggests) a cross between a lemur and a cat. It retains the soft fur of the cat and the coloring, but has the striped tail and yellow eyes commonly found on a lemur. It is more ferocious than the average cat but it is generally no more dangerous than a Chihuahua dog. The scientific name for this new breed is Prolos Fira.

Blonde Vs Bus

A blonde was visiting Washington, DC for the first time. She wanted to see the Capitol building. Unfortunately, she couldn’t find it, so he asked a police officer for directions, “Excuse me, officer, how do I get to the Capitol building?”The officer replied, “Wait here at this bus stop for the number 54 bus. It’ll take you right there.”She thanked the officer and the officer drove off.Three hours later the police officer returned to the same area and, sure enough, our blonde is still waiting at the same bus stop. The officer got out of his car and said, “Excuse me, but to get to the Capitol building, I said to wait here for the number 54 bus. That was three hours ago. Why are you still waiting?”The blonde replied, “Don’t worry, officer, it won’t be long now. The 47th bus just went by!”

Some Things Never Change

An ivory figurine with prominent breasts and buttocks and other exaggerated sexual characteristics is the world's oldest known depiction of a woman, according German researchers.
The finding has been published in this week's issue of the journal Nature.
Named the Venus of Hohle Fels, after the cave in southwestern Germany where it was recently excavated, the object dates to at least 35,000 to 40,000 years ago, based on more than 30 radiocarbon measurements conducted at the site.
Although tiny - just over 5 centimetres long - the intentionally headless figurine is remarkably detailed, with pronounced genitalia visible between open legs.
"As one male colleague remarked, nothing has changed in 40,000 years," says Nicholas Conard, who reported the find and led the project.
"It is the oldest example of figurative art in any class, making it all the more surprising that the figurine presents such a powerful, sexually aggressive image," says Conard, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Tubingen.
Conard and his team recovered the artifact in six pieces at the cave site, where the scientists had previously found miniature statues of a horse, diving waterfowl and a human-like lion with male sexual features.
The bones of various animals, including cave bears, deer, rhinos and horses, were also excavated.
Sexual emphasis
The scientists attribute all of these finds, including the ancient Venus, to one of the earliest human populations in Europe, the Aurignacian culture, suggesting that figurative art is a European phenomenon that arose before Neanderthals went extinct, when modern humans may have been evolving more complex linguistic, representational skills.
Conard says there are striking similarities between the Hohle Fels figurine and other 'Venuses' that appeared 5000 years later in the Gravettian period, so there may have been a shared cultural tradition.
"All place an emphasis on sexual attributes and lack emphasis on the legs, arms, face and head, made all the more noticeable in this case because a carefully carved, polished ring, suggesting that the figurine was once suspended as a pendant, exists in place of a head," he says.
The carver, who painstaking shaped the object out of a mammoth tusk, included fingers on the hands and even a navel. Deeply incised horizontal lines, which Conard thinks might have represented clothing or straps, were cut over the bulging abdomen.
Significant find
Paul Mellars, a University of Cambridge archaeologist who is currently at Stony Brook University's Turkana Basin Institute, wrote a commentary about the Venus that appears in the same issue of Nature.
Mellars says he fully agrees with Conard's analysis of the object, which he described as "remarkable" and "an archaeological discovery of considerable significance."
"It's at least as old as the world's oldest cave art," Mellars says, adding that viewers "can't avoid being struck by its very sexually explicit depiction of a woman. The breasts really jump out at you."
"I assume it was a guy who carved it, perhaps representing his girlfriend," he says. "Paleolithic Playboy? We just don't know how it was used at this point, but the object's size meant it fit well in someone's hand."

Rude Product Placement?

It is dangerous to tell a woman that she is not beautiful. Each woman believes that beauty is her birth right. Each woman wants to hear those sweetest words in this world- you are so beautiful. (then, what about men? Leave them, who cares about them?)
So, will this ads work? The ad for dermaclay assures women that it will ‘Conceal all facial imperfections.’ Three women, their faces are covered with product descriptions. The faces are entirely covered. Are their faces so imperfect? Hmm. At least, the eyes could have avoided.
There is another factor. Even the most beautiful girl in this world (by the way, who is that?) may buy this product if a certain psychology works out. An ardent student, who prepares for a competitive exam, may buy the entire book he can. Because, he fears that the crucial question may come from this book. Like that, the perfect lady too may want to add more perfection.

Segways for the trike-set

When you went around stomping on your Segway, your kid might have been envious and wanted something similar. While Segways are not exactly designed for little kids, older kids can certainly use them if their legs are long enough. For the younger ones, here is a duplicate called the Dareway.
It is specifically designed for kids and seems like a good gift idea for your child. However, the word ‘dare’ in the Dareway may make you cringe and wonder what the kid must dare about, if he were to play with this cool looking toy. It runs on a 12v rechargeable battery and is operated by a motor. All that the kid has to do is use the foot accelerator to move forward and backward and use the thumbs to steer it around. This could turn you into the ‘best parent’ overnight in the eyes of your child.
However, do make sure you are around at least during the initial few days so that nothing goes wrong when your kid is playing with the Dareway. Segway Scooters have long been a source of joy. The way you can move around uninhibitedly without having to bother about driving or riding is something that is unique to this vehicle. While these have been enjoyed for so long by adults, I guess Dareway paves the way for kids being able to have some fun too!

A Sheepish Pig

She oinks, snuffles in a trough and has a fetching set of trotters.
But it's not just her tail that's curly.
Elizabeth the pig wears a golden fleece that could pull the wool over enough eyes to make her the pride of the flock.

Elizabeth is a spectacularly sheep-like pig
She is a queen of her species - a rare Austrian Mangalitza Gilt - and one of only a handful to thrive in Britain.
Elizabeth was the star buy at a livestock auction in Lancashire at the weekend.
There was frantic bidding, with farmer Tim Fitton paying the winning £250 to buy her for his daughter Alice.
'My daughter really took a shine to her,' he said.

Elizabeth was subject to a fierce bidding war, with the winner paying £250
'We love animals and we just came along to see what this one was all about really.
'We have got to promote these new breeds and it will be interesting to see what happens when we take her home and our own pigs see her. I hope we can breed from her.'
The pig, christened Elizabeth by her new keeper, is settling in well.

You Are The Pathway To Happiness

If you want to be happy you must take responsibility and stop looking to things or people to make you happy. You are the source of your own happiness, stop looking elsewhere. Instead of seeking happiness, start creating it. Here are a few ways to get rolling:
1) The attitude of gratitude. Express gratitude daily for everything. Don’t forget to appreciate you smallest blessings. Remember, this one is scientifically proven to produce tangible results.
2) Be thankful to others. Appreciate the people in your life, and practice saying thank you for any courtesy they show you. It is too easy to take those around us for granted. Show them the same consideration you would like shown to you.
3) Honor other people. This goes beyond courtesy, it is a form of giving. Treat everyone you meet as if they have a big sign on their chest saying “make me feel worthwhile.” If you do this you will discover a hidden source joy.
4) Be positive. A positive attitude will move your focus toward all that is good in your life. That means you will not be focused on anything negative. For an excellent article on how to do this read: Positivity Leads to a Flourishing Life
5) Project happiness. Even if you are not feeling especially joyful, adopt a joyful persona. Your body language and words send powerful signals to your nervous system. You can change your feelings by acting the way you want to feel, and it happens very quickly.
6) Perform acts of kindness. Don’t wait to be asked, if you see an opportunity to do something nice for someone else, do it! It doesn’t need to be a big thing, hold the door for a stranger, or smile a anyone you make eye contact with. Look for opportunities to make others feel good.
7) Make a decision to be HAPPY. This is the most important step on the road to a happy life. Simply make up your mind to be the happiest person you know, and you will be. You are the key to your own happiness, so go ahead, unlock it once and for all.Via--http://advancedlifeskills.com/blog/what-controls-your-happiness/

Busting Some Homeless Myths

While it may be true that a significant proportion of homeless people have mental and physical health issues, problems with alcoholism or substance abuse, none of these are the most common cause of homelessness. As part of the United States Conference of Mayors, Hunger and Homelessness Survey, December 2007, cities were asked to record the top three most common causes for both singles and households with children. The lack of affordable housing was rated third highest (43%) behind mental illness for singles and came out a clear cut winner for families, scoring a staggering 87%. In the UK, homeless charity Crisis says their own research cites breakdown in family or relationships as the main cause.
The largest growth sector in homelessness is homeless families. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of Community Planning and Development’s latest Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) claims that 37% of the total homeless population are persons in families. It further shows that 28% of those persons in families were unsheltered i.e. rough sleeping or living in places considered unfit for human habitation. A sheltered family is described as typically consisting of a mother and two or three children. Around half of these children are under the age of six.
Despite the common misconception, not all homeless people are idle. According to the 1996 National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers (NSHAPC), 44% of homeless participants had done paid work during the past month. UK based charity, Crisis, claim that 2% of homeless people are currently in full-time employment and a further 12% work part-time. Their surveys also show that 77% of homeless people would like to be employed and the vast majority have worked in the past.
Homeless people are more likely to be victims than perpetrators of assault. The NSHAPC shows that 22% of all homeless people have been physically assaulted and 7% have been sexually assaulted. 38% have had money or possessions stolen directly from them. According to Crisis, homeless people are 13 times more likely to be a victim of violence than the general population.
Research from The National Runaway Switchboard (2001) suggests that one in every seven children will have run away from home before they reach eighteen. The US Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention found that in 1999, more than one-fifth of an estimated 1,682,900 children who ran away from home or were thrown out by their caregivers had been physically or sexually abused at home in the twelve months prior, or was afraid of being harmed if they returned. A 1997 study by the US Department of Health and Human Services states that 46% had been physically abused and 17% had been forced into unwanted sexual activity by a family or household member. The National Runaway Switchboard research shows that each year, assault, illness and suicide claims the lives of approximately 5000 homeless minors.
Children in care are overwhelmingly more likely to be homeless as adults. In a 1997 Shelter study, Report on Transitional Housing for Emancipated Foster Youth in Los Angeles County, it was found that an estimated 45% of all youths who ‘age out’ of the foster care system each year will be emancipated directly onto the streets and into homelessness, or will lack a life plan to prevent the likelihood of homelessness within the near future.
Figures concerning homeless veterans vary but it is likely that they represent between 12% and 17% of the total homeless population. The US Department of Veterans Affairs projects that almost 200,000 veterans are homeless on any given night and around 400,000 will experience homelessness in any twelve month period. 4% of homeless veterans are women and 89% received an honorable discharge.
Another common misconception is that the homeless are content to leech off state benefits and services. The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2002 shows that more than 40% of homeless people qualify for disability payments but less than 11% receive them. 48% of families do not receive welfare benefits to which they are entitled. Crisis research shows that although homeless people are far more likely to have health problems than the general public, they are 40 times less likely to be registered with a doctor or clinic.
Homeless women, although fewer in numbers are not necessarily given priority treatment. Crisis states that 60% of homeless women have slept rough and 40% report having been excluded from a service. One in five homeless women became so to escape violence and yet less than one in three are accepted by local authorities for housing.
It is often assumed that food and shelter assistance is readily available. The AHAR estimates that in January 2007, there were 672,000 homeless persons on a given night. This is likely to be grossly below the true figure which other sources estimate to be as high as 2.5million. What is known is that there were 611,000 beds available and facilities outside major urban centers are extremely limited. In the 2007 Hunger and Homelessness Survey, 52% of participating cities reported that they are unable to meet the need for providing shelter and that it is necessary to turn people away some or all of the time. Cities also reported that they are not meeting the need for emergency food assistance. On average, 17% of all those in need and 15% of families with children are not receiving it. Furthermore, 95% expected demand for food assistance to increase during 2008.

The Miracle Fruit

What is Miracle Fruit?
Miracle Fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum), sometimes known as the Miracle Berry, is a plant native to West Africa. The berry has a mildly sweet flavor; however, the fruit is treasured not for its own taste, but for the fruit’s unique effect on the taste buds.
Miracle Fruit contains a glycoprotein called miraculin, which binds to the tongue’s taste buds when the fruit is consumed. Miraculin acts as a sweetness inducer when it comes in contact with acids, causing bitter and sour foods to taste sweet, temporarily. This effect usually lasts between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
The plant was first documented in 1725, when explorers in West Africa observed the local tribes picking the berries and chewing them before meals.
Recently, the fruit has become popular in food tasting events, sometimes referred to as "Miracle Fruit Parties." Partygoers consume sour and bitter foods -- such as lemons, radishes, and beer -- to experience the dramatic change in taste.
Miracle Fruit is available in three forms: The actual berries (which are usually frozen due to their high perishability), freeze-dried fruit granules, and miracle fruit tablets.
Is Miracle Fruit Safe?
Miracle Fruit has no known adverse effects. Western civilization has known about the fruit for over 275 years and no harmful effects have been documented.
Experiencing Miracle Fruit
Berries : Put one berry in your mouth and gently scrape the fleshy part off the seed. Swirl this around your mouth for 2 minutes before swallowing.
Freeze-Dried Granules : Place approximately 1 gram of the granules in your mouth and let them slowly dissolve on and around your tongue. Wait at least one minute before swallowing.
Tablets : Place one tablet in your mouth and gently swirl it around with your tongue until dissolved.Once you have consumed your Miracle Fruit, the tasting can begin!
