The Enlightened Frog
The Daily Dozen feature on National Geographic, edited by photo editor Susan Welchman, is a treasure trove of neat "Your Shots" photos submitted by the magazine’s readers (a selection of which will actually appear on the magazine itself - talk about awesome!).I particularly like this one, submitted by James Snyder who wrote:
This is a Cuban tree frog on a tree in my backyard in southern Florida. How and why he ate this light is a mystery. It should be noted that at the time I was taking this photo, I thought this frog was dead having cooked himself from the inside. I’m happy to say I was wrong. After a few shots he adjusted his position. So after I was finished shooting him, I pulled the light out of his mouth and he was fine. Actually, I might be crazy but I don’t think he was very happy when I took his light away.

Ut Oh I AM A Trouble-Maker
Company director Gary Sanders was speaking on a hands-free phone as he was travelling to work when police in the Mersey Tunnel ordered him to pull over.Mr Sanders, 47, said he was stunned to be told by a traffic officer that laughing while driving a car can be an offence.
The managing director of Spontex Workwear said: "I couldn't believe it when he told me I'd been pulled over for for laughing.
"I was driving very safely in the tunnel and took a call from a friend on my hands-free phone.
"He said something funny and I was laughing - simple as that. I never took my eyes off the road and was in full control of the car.
I was astonished that he could say that laughing might be an offence. What is the country coming to?Motorist Gary Sanders
"I was astonished that he could say that laughing might be an offence. What is the country coming to?"
Supt Kevin Hagger of the Mersey Tunnels Police said: "I wouldn't want to make a comment as I don't know the full details.
"There is no record of the incident in the system so it seems the gentleman was just spoken to by the officer and the matter not taken any further."
A spokesman for the Association of British Drivers, Brian Gregory said: "This is a shocking example of the police harassing innocent motorists simply because they are an easy target.
"To suggest that a driver could be prosecuted for laughing is ludicrous beyond belief."

New Tires Inspired By Bees
Entomologists/Armor Makers/Engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have created tires for the military (or hyperbolic rap stars') Humvee that are bullet proof. Okay, the developers not really insect scientists, but they did use the honeycomb pattern that busy little bumble bees use. They just used it to stop bullets.
More importantly, though, these new, sweet (get it?), airless tires can survive landmine attacks. IED (improvised explosive devices) take many forms, but landmines (like at the beginning of Ironman) are one of the most nefarious. These tires can sustain a blast like that and still drive away at 50 mph.
The tires are currently in development, and mind-blowingly, cost about the same to make as normal tires. If they decide to go forward with them, they should be avaialble in 2011. Also, I am now more terrified than ever of bees.

Christian Salt HMmmmmm
Sit down and prepare yourself for one of the most ridiculous stories to hit the wire in a while.According to Examiner.com , a retired barber Joe Godlewski was getting sick of seeing so many television chefs gravitate towards kosher salt that he said: "What the heck's the matter with Christian salt?" and has created his own Blessed Christians Salt to compete. What makes his salt so wonderfully Christian? It's sea salt blessed by an Episcopalian priest. Godlewski (inspired by his name?) wants to "keep Christianity on the table, in the household, however I can do it," and claims that it has at least as much flavor and beneficial minerals as kosher salt. The ignorance in all of this just makes my head hurt. Let's back up to the world of kosher salt. It's not a branded label to sell a religion. It's a type of salt with increased surface area on the crystals, which absorbs blood more efficiently (to stay in line with Jewish dietary law). It is not blessed, but rather examined to make sure that the food and its process are, well, kosher. Television chefs aren't using it to advertise Judaism, but because it's easy to pinch and distribute. But it gets "better": If the guy succeeds with this project, he'll begin an entire line of Christian-branded foods including rye bread, bagels, and pickles. The kosher salt thing just reeks of ignorance, but this... I never thought Anti-Semitism and money paranoia would extend to any food a Jewish person (along with the rest of the world!) eats. Will this guy go so far as to include unleavened bread as well? But maybe it's just me. Do you folks watch the use of kosher salt and feel a sudden urge to convert?

Vehicle Speed On The Windshield
This innovative device gives you ultra-accurate compass headings and speed readings while you drive. A convenient heads-up display projects the info onto your windshield and lets you keep your eyes on the road ahead. You can see your speed in MPH or KPH, and set the Speed Alert to let you know when you’re going faster than you should be–a great feature for cars without cruise control! For added functionality, it’s Bluetooth-compatible, so it works with your PDA, SmartPhone or PC laptop, plus all navigation software. Plugs into your car’s cigarette lighter for charging. Comes with everything you need for easy installation.

A Brief History of Alcatraz Before The Prison
The name Alcatraz is derived from the Spanish "Alcatraces." In 1775, the Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala was the first to sail into what is now known as San Francisco Bay - his expedition mapped the bay and named one of the three islands Alcatraces. Over time, the name was Anglicized to Alcatraz. While the exact meaning is still debated, Alcatraz is usually defined as meaning "pelican" or "strange bird."
In 1850, a presidential order set aside the island for possible use as a United States military reservation. The California Gold Rush, the resulting boom in the growth of San Francisco, and the need to protect San Francisco Bay led the U.S. Army to build a Citadel, or fortress, at the top of the island in the early 1850s. The Army also made plans to install more than 100 cannons on the island, making Alcatraz the most heavily fortified military site on the West Coast. Together with Fort Point and Lime Point, Alcatraz formed a "triangle of defense" designed to protect the entrance to the bay. The island was also the site of the first operational lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States.
By the late 1850s, the first military prisoners were being housed on the island. While the defensive necessity of Alcatraz diminished over time (the island never fired its guns in battle), its role as a prison would continue for more than 100 years. In 1909, the Army tore down the Citadel, leaving its basement level to serve as the foundation for a new military prison. From 1909 through 1911, the military prisoners on Alcatraz built the new prison, which was designated the Pacific Branch, U.S. Disciplinary Barracks for the U.S. Army. It was this prison building that later became famous as "The Rock."

This Day In Entertainment History
March 21, 1980
J.R. Ewing is shot!On this day in 1980, J.R. Ewing, the character millions loved to hate on television’s popular primetime drama Dallas, is “shot.” The simulated shooting made the season-ending episode one of television’s most famous cliffhangers, inspired widespread media coverage and left America wondering “Who shot J.R.?” for the next eight months. On November 21, 1980, the premiere episode of Dallas’s third season solved the mystery, identifying Kristin Shepard, J.R.’s wife’s sister and his mistress, as the culprit.
The CBS television network debuted the first five-episode pilot season of Dallas in 1978; it went on to run for another 12 full-length seasons. The first show of its kind, Dallas was dubbed a “primetime soap opera” for its serial plots and dramatic tales of moral excess. The show revolved around the relations of two Texas oil families: the wealthy, successful Ewing family and the perpetually down-on-their-luck Barnes family. The families’ patriarchs, Jock Ewing and Digger Barnes, were former partners locked in a years-long feud over oil fields Barnes claimed had been stolen by Ewing. To make matters more interesting, Ewing’s youngest son Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and Barnes’ daughter Pam (Victoria Principal) had married, linking the battling clans even more closely. The character of J.R. Ewing, Bobby’s oldest brother and a greedy, conniving, womanizing scoundrel, was played by Larry Hagman.
As J.R. had many enemies, audiences were hard-pressed to guess who was responsible for the shooting. That summer, the question “Who Shot J.R.?” entered the national lexicon, becoming a popular t-shirt slogan, and heightening anticipation of the soap’s third season, which was to come in the fall. Much to the dismay of Dallas fans, the premiere was delayed because of a Screen Actors Guild strike. When it finally aired, the episode revealing the shooter became one of television’s most-watched shows, with an audience of 83 million people, and helped put Dallas into greater worldwide circulation. It also popularized the use of the cliffhanger by television writers.
The shooting of J.R. was not Dallas’s only notorious plot twist. In September 1986, fans learned that the entire previous season, in which main character Bobby Ewing had died, was merely a dream of Pam’s. The show’s writers had killed the Bobby character off because Duffy had decided to leave the show. When he agreed to return, they featured him stepping out of the shower on the season-ending cliffhanger, and then were forced the next season to explain his sudden reappearance.
The last premiere episode of Dallas aired on May 3, 1991. A spin-off, Knots Landing, aired from December 27, 1979 until May 13, 1993. Dallas remains in syndication around the world.

"Say No To Racism" A True Story
Johannesburg (South Africa) London (UK).
A white woman, about 50 years
old, was seated next to a black man.
Very disturbed by this, she called the air hostess.
‘You obviously do not see it then?’ she asked. ’You placed
me next to a black man. I did not agree to sit next to someone from
such a repugnant group.Give me an alternative seat.’
‘Be calm please,’ the hostess replied.
‘Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will
go to see if another place is available.’
The hostess went away then came back a few minutes later.
‘Madam, just as I thought, there are no other available
seats in Economy Class.
I spoke to the captain he informed me that there is also no
seat in Business Class. All the same, we still have one place in First
Class.’
Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued.
‘It is not usual for our company to permit someone from
Economy Class to sit in First Class. However, given the circumstances,
the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next
to someone so disgusting.’
The Hostess turned to the black guy, said,
‘Therefore, Sir, if you would like to, please collect your hand
luggage, a seat awaits you in First Class.’
At that moment, the other passengers, who’d been
shocked by what they had just witnessed, stood up applauded."

Charles Manson Turns 74
Charles Manson is looking pretty good for a 74-year old.
The photo of the 74-year-old Manson was taken Wednesday as part of a routine update of files on inmates at Corcoran State Prison, where he is serving a life sentence for conspiring to murder seven people,
Trivia: That tattoo on his head was originally an X, but he later converted it into a swastika."Via: http://thejaywalkblog.com

Bathroom Perv Incriminates Himself
Mar 19th 2009
By Matt Glazebrook
Have you seen this creep? Well, if you've been hanging around public bathrooms in New Paltz, N.Y., he may have seen you. Or at least, parts of you.
Police are looking for a 6-foot-tall bespectacled man in his late 30s with a beard and ponytail, after he left a tiny video recorder in the unisex bathroom of a New Paltz Starbucks, with the apparent intention of capturing customers as they went about their dirty business.
The reason cops were able to give out such a specific description of the would-be perv? Genius here managed to film himself while he set up his scatological spy-cam.
Starbucks employees discovered the 2-inch device a few hours after it had been placed and handed it over to police -- but not before it caught one unsuspecting coffee lover trousers-down. No word on whether it was a number one or number two, or whether the baristas took a quick peek at the footage before doing their civic duty."

Hairy Fashion

A WOMAN has woven an entire wardrobe of clothes out of her own hair, after growing it for more than 50 years.
Ioana Cioanca, 71, has created everything from a hat to a skirt from her 40-inch-long tresses. She told the Austrian Times. “I have nine items – a hat, a shawl, a skirt, a blouse, a raincoat, a purse, a handbag and a pair of gloves.“They are all slightly different colours because of course I went grey over the years.”The 71-year-old from Bistrita Nasaud, Romania, added: “I did this because I wanted to show how practical human hair is. "The clothes are warm and comfortable – and the materials are free.”
